We are delighted to announce ‘The Return of The Magnificent Seven’ – a special dinner in honour of ‘That Try!‘
The dinner will reunite all 7 players from ‘That Try‘ which includes Phil Bennett OBE, J. P. R. Williams MBE, John Pullin, John Dawes OBE, Tommy David, Derek Quinnell and of course Sir Gareth Edwards CBE.
On January, 27th 1973 the Barbarians, including 12 Lions from the successful tour to New Zealand 18 months earlier, took on Ian Kirkpatrick’s All Blacks at Cardiff Arms Park.
What followed was an extraordinary exhibition of rugby at its best with the Barbarians scoring four tries en route to an exhilarating 23-11 win including that remarkable team effort finished off by the diving Gareth Edwards that is still hailed as the “greatest ever”.
Kirkpatrick to Williams. This is great stuff. Phil Bennett covering, chased by Alistair Scown. Brilliant! Oh, that’s brilliant! John Williams, Brian Williams, Pullin, John Dawes. Great dummy! David, Tom David, the half-way line. Brilliant by Quinnell. This is Gareth Edwards. A dramatic start. What a score! Oh that fellow Edwards.
If the greatest writer of the written word would have written that story, no one would have believed it.
The event will commence at 7:30pm and will include a sumptuous three-course dinner, charitable raffle and auction. The dress code is lounge suits and dresses.
